Thoits Insurance – Embracing the Past, While Poised for the Future. A Place Where Ownership is Everything
When thinking of the insurance industry, the words ‘modern’ and ‘hip’ don’t typically come to mind. However, Thoits Insurance of San Jose is modernizing the insurance industry with a great new look and refreshed outlook on the future.
Indeed, 2009 has been a busy year for Thoits. This year has brought a new CEO, a new website and logo, even in these trying times. While still preserving the same core values it has maintained for over a century, Thoits Insurance has been reinventing itself.
It all began in February when Paul Saich was named CEO. As Thoits’ 2nd CEO in decades, he recognizes the value of longevity inherent in Thoits’ corporate culture, and strives to build upon the solid foundation that former CEO Don Way developed and nurtured for so many years. Saich has a strong understanding of the insurance industry and acknowledges the importance of Thoits’ prosperity in today’s challenging economy. Saich joined Thoits in 1996 and was promoted internally from Executive Vice President of Sales.
“Being named CEO of Thoits is a great honor, as well as a great responsibility. I am assisted by a group of smart, talented professionals,” said Saich. “With their support, and by continuing to provide superior service to our clients, I’m confident that even in the current unsettled economic climate, Thoits will thrive.”
Thoits unveiled a new logo and website. From edgy colors to interesting fonts, everyone at Thoits had a voice in the result. The new look is a representation of Thoits’ unique ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan) culture, which grants every member of the Thoits team, receptionist to CEO, a piece of Thoits ownership. Former CEO and current Chairman of the Board, Don Way introduced the ESOP to Thoits in 1974 and Thoits became entirely employee-owned in 1975.
“Our ownership culture is embedded in everything we do,” said Way. “Each Thoits employee-owner is invested, accountable, and takes responsibility to further the company’s success, which in turn increases productivity.”
Focused on the future, Thoits is hiring at a time when others are not. Named one of the Best Places to Work in the Bay Area by San Francisco Business Times and San Jose/Silicon Valley Business Journal for the past several years, Thoits is looking to employ the next generation of creative and innovative insurance brokers that will help modernize the industry.
“Poised to grow, Thoits is looking for individuals who will make outstanding contributions to our team and business,” said Karen Aasen, Vice President of Human Resources. “At Thoits, we work hard to continuously improve our employee-owner experience because we are all in this together.
Another focus is Thoits community involvement. Over the years, Thoits has been involved with various Silicon Valley organizations, but it was recently that Thoits executives decided they would establish the Thoits 100. In the spirit of 100% employee-ownership, Thoits is in the the early stages of defining and developing a charitable program that would ultimately incorporate forging relationships with 100 different community organizations.
“Community Service is a core responsibility of being a good corporate citizen,” said Dean Middour, President and Chief Operating Officer. “Because as we do business here in Silicon Valley, we owe it to our community to give back here. It is important that Thoits works to make life better for our clients and for our entire community.”
Since 1891, Thoits has served a vast array of clients in diverse industries from construction to education, non-profits to start-ups, Thoits remains dedicated to providing extraordinary service to its clients.
“Bottom line: Clients expect honest counsel and insightful recommendations from their insurance brokerage. They know that is what they always get from Thoits,” said Jamie Gershon, Vice President.
As the economy remains unpredictable, Thoits Insurance will continue to reinvent itself and focus on moving forward.
